Sinn Fein have confirmed that Glenties community activist Brian Carr will join current sitting Sinn Féin Councillors Marie-Therese Gallagher and John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh on the party ticket to contest May’s Local elections for the Glenties Municipal District.

All three were formally selected to go forward for the party at the party’s selection convention last night (Friday) which was held at the Ionad Naomh Pádraig centre in Dore.

The news follows the announcement that Adrian Glackin and Gerry McMonagle were endorsed by the party in Letterkenny on Friday night.

Speaking following last night’s packed convention event, Cllr Marie-Therese Gallagher and John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh said: “We are delighted to once again have received our party’s backing here tonight and to now be officially declared as candidates to contest the 2019 Local Elections for the Glenties M.D.

“It’s, of course, a huge honour to have received our party’s nomination, and the support which all three of us have received here tonight from the members locally has been nothing short of phenomenal and we want to thank them for showing up in such large numbers here tonight.

“We are also thrilled that Brian Carr will be joining us as a candidate this May, as we firmly believe that Brian will be a tremendous addition to the team and he has all the hallmarks of being a truly excellent local representative.

“This is a very exciting time for Sinn Féin here in West Donegal and, with the continued support of our local communities, we’ve no doubt that we can return three Sinn Féin Councillors for the Glenties Electoral Area.

“We want to thank everyone for the support which we’ve received – not just here tonight – but in all the years we’ve been representing the people of this region as elected representatives.”

Brian Carr thanked all his supporters for endorsing his nomination, he said: “I must begin by saying a huge thank you to everyone for coming along tonight and for backing my nomination to be added to the Sinn Féin ticket to contest the 2019 Local Elections here in the Municipal District of Glenties.

“The level of support which I have received from supporters and well-wishers since I publicly declared that I would be seeking the Sinn Féin nomination a few days ago has been so humbling.

“Similarly, the support and encouragement which I have received from the party, particularly from both sitting Councillors Marie-Therese Gallagher and John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh, has been remarkable.

“They have both done a fantastic job over the last number of years as public representatives and they have never wavered in their commitment to represent and act in the interest of ordinary people at Council level.

“As many people will be aware, I have been fortunate enough to have worked as a community activist for many years in my own community in Glenties and in the surrounding area where I have long enjoyed the support of local people, community groups and business owners alike.”
