US family dreams of finding Donegal relations

A family in America have launched a search to find their long-lost relatives ahead of a trip to South Donegal this year.

The Devers, (originally Diver), have traced their family tree back through many generations to a Killybegs man with a thrilling story.

Sarah Dever told Donegal Daily: “My x3 great grandfather, John James Dever was captured by the English Navy from Killybegs, Donegal and escaped the boat in NYC and settled in Warren County NY.

“My grandfather and now my father have done extensive research on the family and we are planning a trip this August and September to visit.

“It’s a stretch, but I’m hoping we can find some extended family and learn more about the family.”

So far, the Devers have researched the area to find a local shop named ‘Divers’, which they plan to visit during their trip.

They are hoping that their online appeal will find the right locals who could possibly put them in touch with extended family to make their trip even more special.

“We can’t wait to see beautiful Ireland and especially Donegal!,” Sarah said.
