Midlands Northwest MEP Matt Carthy will be in Donegal today (Friday) to visit local businesses and groups before speaking at the Donegal Sinn Féin’s AGM.

Brexit and regional issues will be top of the agenda at the political gathering this Friday evening the 1st of March at 7.30pm in Dillion’s Hotel, Letterkenny.

Mr Carthy will begin his trip in Inishowen, visiting representatives of Donegal’s tourism and enterprise sector including Brian McDermot of the Foyle Hotel, Brendan Fallon, developer of enterprise units in Carndonagh. Whilst in Carndonagh, Carthy will also visit the award-winning social enterprise Spraoi agus Spórt.

Ahead of his Donegal visit Carthy was critical of the Dublin-centric nature of current government policies. He said: “We need to see tangible investments in rural communities, particularly those in border regions where the effect of Brexit will be felt most.”

Mr Carthy has been a vocal supporter of Irish Fishing rights in the EU parliament. He will also meet with members of the Foyle Fisherman’s Co-Op today on the potential of the local fishing industry, threats from Brexit, and the need for the completion of the Greencastle Harbour breakwater and the further development of the Harbour.

Carthy will also speak with members of ‘Community For A Clean Estuary’ about the renewed attempts by Irish Water to build a sewerage treatment plant with outflows at Carnagarve Beach.
