New political group sets its roots in Donegal

A new political grouping has been formed in Donegal.

On February 27th last, Aontú held the inaugural meeting of The Glenties Electoral Area Cumann.

The party was founded by T.D. Peadar Tóibín who was effectively forced to resign from his party due to his Pro-Life views.

The new party Aontú “meaning Union or Togetherness” is in response to the substantial amount of people who feel disenfranchised from local and national politics as their voices and concerns are being ignored by those who were supposed to represent them.

Michael Harkin from Creeslough was nominated as Chairperson of the committee and other officers were also elected for an initial three-month period.

A spokesperson said “Even though we are running on a tight schedule we have a very positive outlook and intend to field a Candidate at the next local Council Elections in May. Our next meeting will be on the 9th of March at 8:30pm in Óstan Loch Altan, Gortahork.

If you would like to make a change in the current government or have any suggestions in regard to local matters the committee would be very interested to hear from you. The meeting is open to Members and prospective members.”
