Storm Gareth, the seventh storm of this winter, has eased this afternoon but it certainly its mark for those around the county as thousands remain without power.

It’s estimated that over 1,500 residents in Donegal woke up this morning still without electricity as a cluster of faults swept through the county due to strong gusts last night.

At Malin Head gusts reached 80mph (130km/h) last night as Met Eireann issued an orange warning for wind on Monday and Tuesday.

Those affected worst at present appear to be in the Glenties and Lettermacaward areas where a fault has left almost 800 customers without power.

Several other parts of Donegal also remain affected by power outages including Letterkenny, Churchill, Keadue, Fanad, Inishowen, Derrybeg, and Doochary

ESB Networks says it is working restore power as quickly as possible but it could be 6pm in some areas before all power is restored.

“We apologise for the loss of supply. We are currently working to repair a fault affecting your premises and will restore power as quickly as possible.”
