‘Not good enough’ says Horgan after damaging defeat for Finn Harps

Ollie Horgan admitted that Finn Harps simply ‘weren’t good enough’ in last night’s defeat by UCD.

Richie O’Farrell struck twice after Timmy Molloy put UCD in front and a 3-0 win for the Students sent Harps to the bottom of the table.

Defeat leaves Harps as the only side in the Premier Division without a win and it was a worrying night for the traveling supporters at Belfield.

“I’m disappointed in the manner we didn’t show the fight, spirit to try and muster anything after the first goal,” was Horgan’s view as he spoke to the media afterwards.

“We weren’t good enough. The better side won. We didn’t show the hunger and fight. Regardless of losing the game, that’s the most disappointing part.

“We didn’t fight to the end. In games we have been 3-0 down, we fought and kept going but we didn’t do that. UCD totally deserved to win it.”

Horgan had watched UCD lose narrowly to Sligo six days earlier and the Harps manager believes that Collie O’Neill’s team have the capability to stay clear of trouble.

He said: “We watched them last week. They weren’t as good as that tonight and they still ran out comfortable winners. They have more gears in them and I don’t think they’ll be down there with us.”

Horgan referenced a 7-0 loss to Dundalk three years ago in noting that his sides have generally never waved the white flag in adversity. Yet, last night, Harps were a distant second as UCD swept to a deservedly comfortable win.

Horgan said: “That’s the first time id’ say that has happened.

“It has nothing to do with all the games. It’s probably that they didn’t fancy the fight.

“We have to look at ourselves. They, the players, collectively, didn’t muster a fight. We need to address why that happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
