North West Special Olympics Club star Siobhan McCay had a golden morning in Abu Dhabi.
McCay was part of the Ireland team that won gold at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games.
At the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Ireland overcame Bharat 27-14 to win gold.
Strabane woman McCay is a member at the Letterkenny-based North West Special Olympics Club.
Siobhan’s success is the latest for locals to toast following the superb seven-medal haul scooped by Letterkenny gymnast Patrick Quinlivan.
Ireland had a stunning week that included wins over UAE (22-5), Kazakhstan (20-6), France (24-5) and Egypt (30-17) with McCay playing a lead role.
Involved in Special Olympics since Easter 2006, Siobhan initially played netball before discovering a talent and passion for basketball.
Her father, Tommy, is a coach with the Ireland team.
There are 7,500 athletes from 190 countries competing across 24 sports in the Games, which are the biggest sporting and humanitarian event in the world this year with Convoy man Leon McDaid a part of the Ireland men’s basketball team.
Part of an overall 91-strong Team Ireland squad, Siobhan and her fellow athletes will represent Ireland at highest level of sporting competition for Special Olympics athletes.
