Jack Doherty’s late goal won the Dr Tony O’Neill National Senior Cup for Carndonagh Community School for the third time in four seasons.

Doherty pounced in the 82nd minute to net the only goal of the game at Whitehall.

With the game threatening to head for extra time, Doherty rose to head in a cross from Mikey Friel and spark jubilant scenes.

In a cagey opening to the game, Matthew O’Reilly went close for Midleton, but was just unable to keep his shot on target.

At the other end, Friel seized on a mistake in the Midleton defence, but they recovered to avert the danger.

Carndonagh’s Kieran Farren and Midleton’s Joe Stack both tried their luck, but the deadlock was intact at the interval.

Luke Rudden, after a superb piece of play involving Friel, dragged wide as the clock ticked on.

And just when it seemed as if the stalemate was going to stay unbroken, Carn struck gold.
