A proposal for Donegal to back an All-Ireland Pollinator Plan has been adopted by Donegal County Council.
Inishowen Councillor Albert Doherty proposed the motion calling on the council to adopt, implement and actively promote the plan.
The plan was unanimously supported and adopted by members this week.
Cllr Doherty has welcomed members support which now directs Donegal County Council to sign a framework agreement, become an official partner with the Pollinator Plan and affirm the local authority’s commitment to support pollinators in County Donegal.
Cllr Doherty stated “To help pollinators, we need to ensure that they have food, shelter and safety from chemicals such as pesticides.
“Council owned grounds, parks and open spaces can play a critical supportive role for pollinators.
“Friendly pollinator actions include managing the land in a slightly different way than has been the norm, now working it in a way that it is sustainable for pollinators so that they can survive and continue to provide us with their vital service.
“Ireland depends on pollinating insects to pollinate our crops, fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, many of our pollinators are now threatened with extinction. There is much better awareness now about the importance and the plight of the bees and the fact that all of us including County Councils can do something to help them.
“Community groups, Tidy Town committees, farmers, schools, sports groups and the local authorities et al can and are the essential ingredients required in implementing the plan and making the landscape more pollinator friendly.
“Donegal County Council has now committed to what will be a lengthy venture. The Pollinator Plan is a cross-sector initiative requiring interest, cooperation, understanding, awareness sharing and Actions.”
“Doing nothing is not an option,” Cllr Doherty concluded.
