Urgent appeal hopes to save the life of sick puppy

The ISPCA is issuing an urgent appeal to help save Odhrán, an 8-week old Spaniel cross puppy born in Donegal.

Little Odhrán is travelling to UCD Veterinary Hospital this afternoon for an emergency cardiac surgery to save his life.

But the operation to help save the sweet pup’s life could cost up to €2,000, and the ISPCA are urgently appealing for funds from kind-hearted animal lovers.

Puppy Odhrán

Odhrán’s mother Beth gave birth to five beautiful puppies while in ISPCA care. Their carer at the ISPCA Donegal Animal Rehabilitation Centre gradually introduced solid food into their diets, and while four of the litter managed very well, they noticed that one little puppy struggled. Odhrán was incredibly slow to eat, and when he did, he fought to keep the food down. His carer tried different puppy food types and consistencies, but was concerned when he continued to regurgitate.

Following urgent assessments and x-rays, vets discovered a sac-like pouch called a diverticulum on his oesophagus into which food was being diverted when Odhrán attempted to eat. Due to its seriousness it was recommended by our vet that the ISPCA seek out a Cardiac Specialist to repair the condition, which they believe is being caused by an abnormality in his heart called Persistent Right Aortic Arch.

Odhrán’s emergency surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning at UCD Veterinary Hospital.

ISPCA Donegal Animal Centre Manager Denise McCausland said: “Odhrán is such a sweet and brave little puppy, and though he is small little his personality is already starting to show. He is so young and deserves the best chance to overcome this condition and live a happy life. Thanks to the staff at the UCD Veterinary Hospital for helping with this surgery that will hopefully save him.”

This kind of specialised surgery could cost up to €2,000 and the ISPCA is appealing for funds to help us cover the cost of the procedure that will hopefully save Odhrán’s life.
