A planning application has been lodged for a €25 million community hospital next to Letterkenny University Hospital.

The new hospital will have 110 beds, with 10 beds being assigned for a new dementia unit. The project will go to planning over the coming weeks.

County councillor Ciaran Brogan has welcomed the news.

“This is one of the most positive developments in the local health service in recent years,” Cllr Brogan commented.

“This new community hospital will provide the best in terms of medical care, residential care, dementia care, convalescent care and respite care.”

“I have been a member of the Regional Health Forum HSE West for the last 13 years and this is a project that I have been pursuing during all of that time. It is proposed that work will commence on the project in the first quarter of 2020, with the end of 2021 set as the completion target,” Cllr Brogan said.

“This much-needed community facility is being procured through a Public Private Partnership. A planning application will be lodged soon, with construction due to get underway early next year,” he added.

“This confirmation is great news for the local health service. A design team was appointed in 2018, and with definite time-frames now in place, I look forward to seeing this project come to fruition,” he added.
