Richard Thornton makes no bones about it – he wants to unlock the ‘serious potential’ at St Eunan’s.

A derby win over Glenswilly yesterday evening made it three-from-three for the Coalisland man, who has taken over as St Eunan’s manager this year, having been a selector to Maxi Curran in 2018.

St Eunan’s, by their lofty standards, have had a barren few years at senior level, but Thornton hopes to change that.

“There is a serious potential in this club and we have to get the whole thing pushing in the right direction,” he told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub after the win over Glenswilly at O’Donnell Park.

“It’s a big club.

“We started to push a lot of youth into the reserves last year. We had seven of the guys from the reserve final last year start in the first game.

“It’s a big process. We want to get them used to playing senior football, but also come along with the right mentality and mindset.”

St Eunan’s head for old foes Naomh Conaill on Sunday with maximum points from their opening three games.

Thornton said: “We’re happy enough. It’s early days yet. We have a lot that we need to work on, but you’re trying to get the work rate and the attitude right.”
