The Minister for Defence has been urged to mobilise the Air Corps helicopters in an effort to halt the spread of wild gorse fires in West Donegal
The fire, which is located between Loughanure and Annagry, started in the early hours of this morning.
Five units of the Donegal Fire Service are currently tackling the blaze.
Firemen are also digging trenches and dousing down the exterior of houses in a bid to divert the flames from dwellings.
Dozens of locals are also supporting the fire services as entire communities battle to put out the fires.
Speaking on Monday, Pat the Cope Gallagher said: “I have been in direct contact with the Minister of Defence Officials and I have advised that the Air Corps are immediately called out in order to deal with the gorse fires otherwise we run serious risks of property damage or even worse.
“The situation at present is very precarious and unless extra manpower is drafted in to assist the excellent work of the fire service and the many locals I fear we may not get a handle on this ever-spreading fire.
“Donegal County Council are also hiring a private helicopter to assist,” he added.
The Minister’s office knows first hand through my intervention the gravity of the situation and I will maintain constant contact with them until we get the Air Corps mobilised.”
