Irish Water need to show respect for the people of Moville and Greencastle and their public representatives, says Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn.
The Sinn Fein politician reacted angrily to the repeated failure of Irish Water to meet a delegation of local councillors, Oireachtas members and a delegation from the Community For A Clean Estuary group in relation to their concerns about the planned Moville and Greencastle sewerage scheme.
Senator Mac Lochlainn revealed that he learned this morning that rather than agree to that meeting in Moville, requested months ago, Irish Water are proposing to brief Donegal Oireachtas members on the scheme in Dublin on the 14th May.
He said this is now outrageous behaviour from Irish Water management.
“I was advised months ago that this meeting would go ahead in Moville but rather than confirm the meeting that we all have requested, they intend to brief the Donegal Oireachtas members in Dublin.
“As we have seen at the recent meeting of the Inishowen Municipal District, the local councillors are united with the concerned local community and myself in opposing the plans presented by Irish Water at their public information meeting, late last year in Moville.
“We all believe that the outflow from the new sewerage infrastructure planned for Moville and Greencastle show go out in to open sea, north of Greencastle rather than into the Foyle estuary at Carnagarve beach, threatening the local beaches and the shore walk.”
He said Irish Water need to show some respect and listen to the real concerns of the local community.
“Everyone agrees that this sewerage infrastructure is badly needed to grow the potential of Moville and Greencastle but the only reason that it is not already delivered is years of dogged refusal by a range of officials and consultants to move away from a sewerage treatment plant at Carnagarve.
“Have they learned nothing from the years of failure? It appears not from this latest experience.
“Let us be clear. The reason why we have sought this meeting again and again over recent months is to prevent any more time delays and any more waste of public money. They need show respect and they need to listen. We are demanding a date for the meeting that has been requested, not for a meeting in Dublin for Oireachtas members only”.
