Gardaí have refuted widespread rumours of an attempted abduction in Carndonagh.
Stories circulating on social media had claimed that a kidnapping attempt was made on a girl outside a local nightclub on Easter Weekend. However, these claims were proven false and the story was ‘blown out of proportion’, Gardaí have now confirmed.
Garda Grainne Doherty said: “I’m aware that this story is circulating on social media at present. It’s growing at an awful rate.
“There was no attempted kidnapping on that date at the Tul na Rí. A very minor incident did occur and it has totally been blown out of proportion, to be honest. It certainly wasn’t an attempted kidnapping.”
Garda Doherty also issued a warning over false social media posts. Speaking during this week’s community Garda slot, she said: “People should be very cautious about stories that they are spreading on social media, particularly in relation to identifying people that have possible not committed any sort of criminal act whatsoever.
“It would create a lot of fear within communities and it’s very unfair to the person or people involved.”
