Gardaí in Donegal have revealed that they arrested three males on Monday night following a lengthy pursuit of a drunk driver outside Rathmullan.
Two units were dispatched and subsequently attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the driver failed to stop and was involved in numerous counts of dangerous driving towards Letterkenny, Gardaí revealed.
Further assistance was later required from Gardaí in Letterkenny and the Roads Policing Unit, with a checkpoint put in place and the car eventually brought to a stop when it collided with a marked Garda car attached to Milford.
Two of the passengers in question have subsequently been released without charge, while another male remains in Garda custody.
If brought to court for drink driving, drivers can face a minimum of a three-year ban for their first offence, or a six-year ban from driving if it is their second offence and if the concentration of alcohol exceeds 66mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. As these are minimum penalties, the judge has the discretion to increase these penalties.
The maximum penalty for drink driving is €5,000 or 6 months in prison or both.
