Irish Water to determine timeframe for Ballindrait water supply upgrade

Irish Water has agreed to carry out replacement works of the water mains in the Ballindrait area, it emerged on Friday.

The news comes after six unprecedented bursts happened in the area in a two-week spell, leaving residents and businesses without water for days on end.

Irish Water in conjunction with the Donegal County Council has been working to determine the next phase of tranche for the rehabilitation scheme under the Leakage Reduction Programme.

Cllr Gary Doherty, who originally made calls for an imminent solution in the area, said this morning news was a ‘good first step’.

“Irish Water have agreed now in principle to fix the water mains in this area, which is very welcoming news for the residents here,” Doherty said.

“The supply disruption that they have been having, not just over the last few weeks, but over the last numbers of years has been completely unacceptable and now that Irish Waters have agreed to fix the mains, it is a good first step and welcoming news.

Cllr Doherty confirmed that Irish Water will have a meeting in the coming days to determine the prioritisation of the works in east Donegal.

“But it important that we keep the pressure on Irish Water now as well because they have indicated they will make a decision in the coming days over the prioritisation list that they have for the county.

“And now we know that this area is going to be on that list, we need to ensure that it is on top of that list.”
