Paddy gets creative as Donegal’s first Super Garden contestant

A Donegal garden designer is hoping the sow the seeds of success in RTÉ’s Super Garden competition this week.

Paddy McDermott from Ballybofey will be showcasing his green-fingered talent on the TV series on Thursday 9th May in a bid to feature amongst the top designers in Ireland at Bloom 2019.

And the fact that no Donegal designer has ever taken part in the show is giving Paddy all the competitive edge he needs.

The 35-year-old will have just 4 weeks to build a contemporary style garden for the Kelly family in Letterkenny.

Kieran and Olivia Kelly moved into their home four years ago, shortly after getting married. They recently welcomed the arrival of their first child, Joshua, born in September 2018. But their garden needed some work, so the Kellys decided to hand it over to Paddy so he could bring his ‘Family Togetherness’ design to life.

Paddy has entered the competition with one aim in mind, getting to Bloom!

Paddy McDermott

As the third youngest in a family of 12, he learned to be competitive from a young age playing GAA with his club Burt and for the Donegal county Hurling team.

A retired player, he now lives with wife Lynn and their brand new baby daughter Fianna, who was born in February.

Life has always been busy for Paddy, he left school at 15 to find work.

Working in landscaping for 14 years, Paddy decided to set up his own business Creative Landscaping Works 4 years ago. Some of Paddy’s bigger projects include the Letterkenny Court House, hotels and, his claim to fame, the garden of Danny O’Carroll of Mrs Brown’s Boys. Things have gone from strength to strength for this proud Donegal man but Paddy loves to challenge himself.

Winning club and county hurling medals down through the years, Paddy has a competitive side and says ‘failure’ is his biggest fear.

He’s looking for some more medals to add to his collection, while his wife Lynn describes Bloom as the ‘All Ireland of his profession’.

But to get there, Paddy will have to win over the Super Garden judges. Tune in to see him work his magic in Letterkenny this Thursday 9th May, on RTÉ ONE @ 8.30 pm.
