Gardaí in Donegal are warning people to be wary of a new phone scam doing the rounds recently.
People are being targetted by a caller who claims to be from the office of the Revenue Commissioners. The caller, who has a foreign accent, goes on to ask for personal information.
Gardaí say they are aware of a phone number starting with 051 which is linked with this scam.
Garda Sean Sweeney from Buncrana Garda Station is warning phone users to take the following steps to avoid being caught out: “Please never answer a foreign phone number on your phone unless you are expecting a call from abroad and never ever give out personal information.
“Do not call the number back as this may cost you a fortune.
“Unfortunately these scam artists are obviously making money in this way so be alert and don’t fall victim to them,” Gda Sweeney said.
