The Letterkenny council has been asked to recruit more staff to meet maintenance demands with social houses.
Cllr Ciaran Brogan told this week’s Letterkenny MD meeting that a new model and system is needed to maintain the council’s current housing stock.
“Housing is by far the single biggest area of Donegal County Council, taking in an income of almost €13million a year. We need to appreciate the tenants we have,” Cllr Brogan said.
“Unfortunately, I think since the town council has been abolished we have not had the same level of engagement,” he said.
Cllr Brogan also said that more liaison between the council and tenants and more efforts working with residents associations would help improve community spirit.
The local authority’s response on the matter was: “The Council continuously reviews how to achieve the best outcome for tenants and the Council between doing the work by direct labour or by contractors and trades, with issues such as response times and value for money being key determinants in this regard.”
