A motorist is recovering after being set upon by a gang of men using hurley sticks in a completely unprovoked attack.

The bizarre incident happened in Burnfoot.

The victim was driving along when he was suddenly flashed from behind by another car.

The first driver pulled into the hard shoulder and he was overtaken by another car which clipped off the side of his vehicle.

When he pulled into the hard shoulder, the two occupants of the other car got out and attacked his car with hurley sticks.

The thugs smashed both the windscreen of the vehicle as well as the side windows before jumping back into their own car and fleeing the scene.

The victim was physically unhurt but left traumatised by the attack which happened around 10.30pm on May 22nd at Dundrain, Burnfoot.

A Garda spokesman said “This was a terrifying experience and we would ask anybody who may have witnessed it or knows anything about it to contact the Gardai.

“Luckily the person was not physically hurt but they were put through an awful ordeal.”

The attackers’ car is described as a blue saloon car.

Anybody with any information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 93 20540 or they can also call the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
