The heroic efforts of the Greencastle Coast Guard are being praised today after they saved the life of a climber at Malin Head.
A long rescue mission took place last night to save a rock climber at Hell’s Hole.
The male climber became trapped 150ft down a dangerous cliff edge. With difficult and dark conditions, an extensive operation was required to bring him to safety.
The alarm was raised at around 10.30pm on Tuesday night when a member of the public made an emergency call to report that a climber in their group was in difficulty.
The Greencastle Coast Guard was called to the incident by Malin Head HQ, as one of the team members is a specialist in cliff rescue.
“It sounds like a straightforward rescue but it was tricky. The climber was a long way down, about 45 metres,” said a spokesperson with Malin Head Coast Guard.
The casualty was trapped in the dangerous position for around four hours, in darkness, and on an unpredictable rock face of loose rocks.
The Greencastle Coast Guard team successfully brought the man to safety by approximately 1am. An ambulance was called to bring him to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment.
“It was a long operation but a great job done by the Greencastle Coast Guard,” said the Malin Head Coast Guard spokesperson.
