Naomh Columba boss O’Donnell pleased with useful work on the road

Naomh Columba manager Pauric O’Donnell believes the race for promotion to Division One will go right to the tape in 2019.

A gritty 1-11 to 0-11 win over Termon at The Burn Road on Sunday gave Naomh Columba their third away win in a row, with Paddy Byrne’s first-half goal the game’s big score.

Glen head for derby foes Ardara this Sunday, having beaten Four Masters, Dungloe and now Termon away from Pairc na nGael in recent weeks.

Just ten points separate the entire Division Two and O’Donnell says it will stay tight all the way.

“It was an important two points,” O’Donnell said.

“It’s a hard place to come so we’re happy to get the win.

“It’ll be tight there. It’s a tough League and it’s competitive. We’re four weeks on the road in a row and that has been tough.”

With Termon ‘keeper Michael Boyle having strayed away from his goal and being dispossessed, Byrne floated the ball to the net in the 28th minute.

O’Donnell said: “It could have bounced wide as easy as going into the net. It was good to see that he had the initiative to go for it.”

Glen introduced Aaron Doherty in the first half and the youngster had a big influence. Doherty, who has recently joined the ranks of the Donegal senior panel, scored three points, two of them amid a flurry of scores at the outset of the second half.

O’Donnell said: “We were allowed to play Aaron for about 30 minutes or so. We were lucky to have him at the time.

“He had a big influence. He’s a quality player and we’re glad he’s one of ours. We’re glad to see him up with Declan and the Donegal squad. It’s doing him good and he’s enjoying it.”

A fabulous Doherty score from the left flank had Naomh Columba six up at the break and they led by eight before having to survive an onslaught from their hosts.

O’Donnell said: “We did alright in the first half. I thought we should have been more up. We had a couple of easy wides that could have come back to bite us. It was important to keep the goal out and, fair play to the boys, they did that.

“I felt we should have been ten up. We needed that cushion. There was a strong breeze that was hard to defend against.

“We knew Termon would come in the second half. We had a very good start in the second half and that gave us the platform.  Keeping out the goal was a big one for us.”
