Letterkenny Gaels continued their good run in the Jimmy McGlynn Division 4 League after a three-point victory over Urris at Páirc na nGael.

Letterkenny Gaels 2-14 Urris 3-08

Aided by a brisk breeze, the visitors looked dangerous from the off and were four points to the good with just one minute on the clock after a pointed free from Kevin McLaughlin and a goal from Dean Kelly.

A converted 45’ from goalkeeper Kieran Kelly and a point on the fourth minute from Oisin Hessian left the home team trailing by six points.

The next ten minutes belonged to the Gaels and particularly the pairing of Conor Mc Brearty and Mark Hunter.

McBrearty scored a free to settle the nerves of the Glebe men before some great attacking play resulted in a well taken goal from Hunter. Within a couple of minutes Hunter raised the white flag after a brilliant run and layoff from McBrearty.

Urris and the Gaels traded points with Alan Friel and Hunter again on target. Conor Mc Brearty was causing all sorts of danger in the forward line and was taken down inside the square and referee Andrew Mullan awarded a penalty.

Mc Brearty’s effort was palmed over the bar by Urris net minder Kieran Friel to leave one between the sides. Mark Hunter scored another point for the home side to level the game on half time.

The Gaels men began the second half at a higher pace and saw Mc Brearty score a fine point from the throw in while minutes later the ever dependable Sean McDonagh scored a massive point from 45 yards out. The Gaels scored another two points from the boot of Ronan Frain and Conor McBrearty.

Although trailing by four, the visitors always looked dangerous and after a fine point from from Kevin McLaughlin they were awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Kelly.

Both teams were level midway through the second half with scores coming from a Conor McBrearty free and Ronan Doherty for the visitors.

Gaels substitution Odhran McMackin scored a fine 45’ with ten minutes to go. This point kick started the home team again and they scored three unanswered points with two frees coming from McBrearty and one from Brendan O’Brien.

With thirty minutes on the clock, Urris scored another point before Brendan O’Brien fired home to leave six between the sides.

All looked lost for the visitors before Shane Graham’s kick-out was won by the Urris men and the resulting incoming ball from Dean Kelly shot past forwards and defenders to end up in the back of the Letterkenny net.

This was to be the last action of the game with the Gaels holding on to a three-point victory.
