Independent Councillor Frank McBrearty has officially been elected as Cathaoirleach for the Municipal District of Lifford and Stranorlar.
The Raphoe politician, who was recently elected on a Fine Gael ticket in May, officially offered his resignation to the party earlier this month and it was accepted.
The 50-year old blamed internal pressure and claims he was being ‘bullied’ by other members of the party.
McBrearty takes over the role from Fianna Fáil Councillor Patrick McGowan.
