Donegal County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr. Nicholas Crossan and Chief Executive Seamus Neely have expressed their deepest sympathies following the tragic passing of Cllr Manus Kelly.

Mr Kelly, 41, tragically lost his life on Sunday while taking part in the Donegal International Rally. Navigator Donall Barrett was injured in the accident at Fanad Head and is being treated at Letterkenny General Hospital.

Mr Kelly’s promising political career had only just begun, having recently been elected to Donegal County Council representing the Fianna Fáil party.

In 2018, Manus Kelly and Donall Barrett were accorded a civic reception by Donegal County Council for their many achievements in motorsport.

Following yesterday’s tragedy, Donegal County Council has paid tribute to Mr Kelly as a wonderful sportsman and ambassador.

A joint statement from Cathaoirleach Cllr. Nicholas Crossan and Chief Executive Seamus Neely said:

It is with huge sadness this morning that we as the Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, on behalf of the elected members, management and staff, convey our deepest sympathies to the family of the late Cllr. Manus ‘Mandy’ Kelly following his death as a result of a tragic accident yesterday.  His wife Bernie, his five children, his parents, siblings and extended family and friends are all in our thoughts and prayers this morning.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with the Rally fraternity in Donegal and beyond on the loss of one of their greatest ambassadors.

Donegal has lost a wonderful sportsman and ambassador.
