Cloughaneely Golf: Thrilling week of action at ‘Open Week’ for club members

Cumann Gailf Chloich Cheann Fhaola near Falcarragh had a very successful Open Week.

Clun notes:

We had golfers from other clubs in Donegal, GUI Members form Leinster and other Counties, some golfers from Belfast, Scotland and USA! It was great to see a lot of visitors playing the 9 Hole Parkland Course in North West Donegal.

We had great feedback on Tuesday from visiting Portsalon Members commenting after their game ‘Cloughaneely GC greens are the best in the County at the moment’. This is a super testament to a small 9 Hole Golf Club in County Donegal trying to compete with the bigger 18 Hole Golf Courses. Compliments to Philip and his team for their hard work.

We had a great buzz around the Golf Club all week and a special thanks to all the volunteers and club members that helped in the bar and with other various jobs throughout the week.

We would like to thank all our generous sponsors:
Gweedore Bar
Boyces Centra Falcarragh
Óstán Loch Altan
Letterkenny Driving Range
Lafferty’s Supermarket Creeslough
Jimi Gallagher PGA Letterkenny
McClafferty’s Eurospar Gortahork
– Please support our sponsors!  Míle buíochas dár n-urraithe uilig.

Sunday’s Competition was won by Mark McGinley with a score of 37pts. The 1st prize of a ‘yellow wheelbarrow’ created a great talking point before and after the golf. He was followed in 2nd by the steady Kevin Boyle with 36pts. Gross was won by Paul Doherty.

In 3rd was John McGinley with 35pts. The Front 9 was won by John Murphy 20pts and back 9 won by Conor Ó Gallchóir 19pts. Visitors Prize went to Andy McCallin from Balmoral GC with Michael Barry Gaoth Dobhair winning the Longest Drive.

Thanks to Thomas McClafferty and Eurospar Gortahork for their kind sponsorship.

On Saturday it was Seán Ó Gallchóir, Vincent Collum and John Murphy that got the best conditions of the day to win the 3 Ball better Ball.

They were followed in 2nd by Denis Boyle, Francis Boyle and Conor Ó Gallchóir. In 3rd was Dermot McCallion, Bernie McCallion and JB McCallion. Longest Drive was won by Francis Boyle with Gerard McGinley Dunfanaghy winning Nearest the Pin. Thanks for Jimi Gallagher PGA Letterkenny for his kind sponsorship.

The 4 Ball Better Ball on Friday was won by Philip and Matt McGeady with 47pts. A great score they had a few birdies each. In 2nd was Paul Doherty and Francis Boyle with 46pts.

In 3rd on countback was Paul Harkin and Patsy McVicar with 44pts. The Nearest the Pins were won by Paul Doherty and Darragh Geaney with Mark McGinley winning Longest Drive.

Thanks to Danny Lafferty and family from Creeslough Supermarket for their kind sponsorship.

On Thursday we had Ladies Day in the morning. Sadie-Marie Curran won the competition with Frances Rutherford in 2nd place.

Thanks to Orla O’Grady and Óstán Loch Altan for their kind sponsorship. In the evening we had a 9 Hole Gents Single Stroke.

In tough and windy conditions this was won by Denis Boyle shooting 2 over par. In 2nd was Seán Ó Gallchóir on 2 over par and in 3rd was Francis Boyle on 4 over par.
