Listen: ‘No regrets’ as Mark Anthony McGinley settles back in to soccer role

THE DECISION, when it had to be made, ultimately came easy for Mark Anthony McGinley.

The Ards man withdrew from the Donegal senior football panel in March. Having been on the squad since 2015, McGinley stepped aside in the spring with Shaun Patton established as Declan Bonner’s number one.

A month previously, McGinley had put pen to paper at Finn Harps and when Ollie Horgan dialled his number again, the goalkeeper jumped at the chance.

“I have no regrets,” McGinley, who has become Harps’ first choice with Ciaran Gallagher out long-term, told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“It fell right for me. It was a big decision. I enjoyed my years with Donegal. I always played soccer until I joined the Donegal panel.

“I’ve had to work hard. Peter (Burke) was there when i came in and Jamie Bell is there too. He did well and he’s a quality goalkeeper.

“Thankfully things have worked out for me. I have to perform now when I’m in to stay in the team.

“If you’re not knocking down a manager’s door looking to play, you’re in the wrong game. Footballers should want to play every minute of every game. I’m playing at the minute and hopefully it stays that way.”

McGinley has conceded just one goal in the last four games with Harps winning away for the first time in 2019 last Friday as they defeated Waterford 1-0. Tomorrow night, Derry City visit Finn Park.

McGinley said: “It’s all about concentration. The boys, to a man, put in a shift and there were a lot of sore bodies on the bus. It’ll take the same again and maybe more this week.”
