Listen: Caolan Ward on how Donegal team is ‘the greater good’ for squad

CAOLAN WARD admits that he hasn’t been getting as much game time as he’d have wished – but the St Eunan’s man wants to force a change.

Ward was handed a first Championship start of the year in Donegal’s draw with Kerry at Croke Park.

He aims to force a way into Declan Bonner’s XV for Saturday’s do-or-die clash at Castlebar against Mayo.

“I haven’t been getting as much game time as I’d like, but I go to training every night with the same attitude and focus,” Ward told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“You’re there to do a job and if that’s to make an opposition forward better, the likes of Patrick (McBrearty), Michael (Murphy) or Jamie (Brennan)..you;d be doing a disservice by not going there with belief and a willingness to work.

“You want to let them match you and better you. You want to make their job and the management’s job as hard as possible. The team is the greater good of what we’re trying to achieve here.”

While there have been some high-profile departures from the squad in recent months, Ward is of a similar belief to Bonner.

He added:  “Since we met up at the back end of last year, it was about building a squad that was good enough to challenge Dublin and Kerry and Tyrone. We have that. We have a really strong panel. That’s down to the management and the squad who have the belief in every single player.”
