Sean McGoldrick says Essomba bout is ‘massive opportunity’

SEAN MCGOLDRICK is eager to get cracking on a ‘massive opportunity’ in Liverpool on Friday night.

The unbeaten Newport bantamweight, whose father Liam is from Ballyshannon, faces Thomas Essomba for the WBA Continental Bantamweight Championship.

McGoldrick (9-0, 2KOs) squares up to former Commonwealth and English champion Essomba (8-5, 3 KOs) on the Matchroom Boxing card, live on Sky Sports.

“This is a massive opportunity for me,” said McGoldrick.

“I’ve been given a good opponent which is a step up, and it’s a massive card and platform to be on. I’ve been given the chance and it’s up to me now to perform.

“We’ve all been in the gym together and working hard. When everyone is at the same sort of stage it means we’re all pushing and peaking at the right times.”

McGoldrick is entering his third fight of 2019, having beaten Moises Mojica in Cardiff in June after a win over Sean Cairns at the Copper Box Arena in London in March.

McGoldrick said:  “I’ve been working in the altitude centre for this camp too and it’s the first time I’ve done that, and I’ve definitely felt the benefits. We’ve got a great gym buzz at the moment.

“I should hopefully have a good crowd there for the fight. It’s a Friday night so people will be taking time off work to come and see me which I’m grateful for, and I plan on rewarding them with a win.”

The bill in Liverpool on Friday also features two of McGoldrick’s MTK Global team-mates, as Brian Rose takes on Anthony Fowler and Lewis Ritson returns to the ring when he meets Marek Jedrzejewski.
