A primary school in Donegal has been found to have one of Ireland’s largest classes with 42 pupils.
Scoil Naomh Colmcille in Carndonagh is one of three schools in the country to have 42 pupils in one class. The other two most overcrowded classrooms are in Co Galway.
Scoil Naomh Colmcille, which has six classrooms, had average numbers ranging from 17-27 for the other five groups.
The class size figures for 2018/19, released by the Department of Education, show that almost one in five pupils are in classes of 30 or more – which is considered as overcrowded.
The current average class size in Ireland is 24.3.
Other Donegal schools which had high class sizes were St. Macartan’s in Bundoran, with one class of 38 students, one of 35 students and two of 34 students. Scoil Mhuire Creeslough also has a high class size of 36 students.
