Picture Special: Disappointment for Donegal fans as Mayo advance in Castlebar

There was Donegal disappointment in Castlebar on Saturday as the Ulster champions failed to make the All-Ireland semi-finals as Mayo progressed with a 1-14 to 1-10 victory in the Super 8s.

On a rainswept day, Andy Moran kicked two injury-time points to ensure his Mayo side sealed a place in the All-Ireland semi-finals as they withheld any notions of Donegal comeback at Elvery’s MacHale Park.

Cillian O’Connor’s goal helped a dominant Mayo team into a 1-7 to 0-4 lead at the break.

After the interval, Michael Murphy scored a penalty as Donegal fought back to trail by a point but Mayo responded in style.

And, in the end, David Gough’s final whistle brought with it a pitch invasion from the vocal home support in the crowd of 27,023, who have another chapter to write on their journey to win Sam Maguire for the first time since 1951.

Evan Logan was on-hand to capture the best moments from a gloomy day for the Donegal parish in Mayo.
