Two very worthy charities were presented with cheques for €10,000 each
from funds raised in memory of the late Calum Nugent.
The popular Letterkenny lad passed away aged just 25 after battling a
long illness that he bore with great dignity and he still managed to
live a very full life thanks to his positive outlook and his devoted
family.
During his life Calum got to befriend many stars of stage, screen,
sport and the airwaves and two of those, Today FM’s Ian Dempsey and
Mario Rosenstock, came to Letterkenny to perform a special charity
concert in his honour back in May.
This saw a packed house enjoy a hilarious show.
There was also spot prizes, raffles and a bag packing event.
In total they raised a brilliant €20,000 and on Wednesday morning the
Nugent family presented the proceeds of €10,000 each to the charities The Donegal Hospice and Friends of Letterkenny University Hospital.
Calum’s parents Eddie and Pauline, siblings Rhys, Jordan and Grace,
met with representatives from both groups on the grounds of Donegal
Hospice to hand over the money.
Peter Cutliffe said on behalf of the Friends of Letterkenny University
Hospital they would sincerely like to thank the Nugent family for
making such a generous contribution to the group and that it was a
very fitting way to honour Calum’s memory.
This was endorsed by Cllr Ian McGarvey who said it was a wonderful
gesture and lovely way to remember Calum.
Anne McGowan said she was speaking on behalf of both charities when
she said they all were so proud of the family for what they had done
in raising such a large amount of money and added Calum’s memory will
not be forgotten.
The donation for the hospice will go towards a newly constructed
fully-furnished gazebo on the hospice grounds so visiting family
members and patients can spend some time outside in comfort.
Pauline said they would like to thank Beaver Log Cabins for their
generous donation of a ‘love seat’ to go with the new gazebo they
supplied.
The funds raised for the Friends of Letterkenny University Hospital
will go toward a specialised EBUS machine used to diagnose lung cancer
and other conditions.
Pauline said they would like to thank everyone who helped with the
fundraising that raised so much for two great causes and a special
thanks to Mario and Ian, two great friends of Calum’s, for coming all
the way to Donegal at their own expense and putting on a great show.
