Drilling operations on Lough Foyle have been suspended indefinitely by Irish Water following ongoing pressure on the Irish Utility.
A drilling pontoon had been constructed at Carrickarory Pier in Movllle in recent weeks, however, that plan has since been abandoned and the construction has since been dismantled.
This rig was to carry out a geophysical investigation in anticipation of a sewage discharge pipe being installed in the centre of the fishery.
Crane arrives to dismantle drilling pontoon at Carrickarory Pier, Moville.
The move follows concern raised from politicians, fishermen and local protesters in the area.
Last week, the Campaign for a Clean Estuary received confirmation from John Mc Cartney, Director of Conservation and Protection, that operations had been halted following concern about Oyster breeding in July/August on the Lough Foyle.
Operations will not resume until an opportunity to evaluate concerns have been raised.
Speaking to Donegal Daily, Enda Craig, said: “Cranes have arrived to dismantle the Irish Water drilling rig that would have destroyed a very valuable and important fishery at Carnagarve on Lough Foyle.
“Irish water were told by the fishermen that the rig would be blocked if it attempted to locate onto the pipe site.
“A fortune of money squandered because Irish Water did not think it worth their while to consult with the stakeholders of the fishery.
“The crane driver at the pier confirmed the rig be loaded onto lorries and transported back to Scotland after spending two weeks anchored at the nose of Carrickarory Pier in Moville.
“It is now time for Irish Water to confirm how much this debacle has cost the taxpayer of Ireland.”
