MARK ENGLISH was just a fraction short of reaching the qualifying time for the 2019 World Championships tonight.

The Letterkenny man won the 800m at the Tonbridge Twilight meet .

English finished in 1:45.98, staving off British champion Spencer Thomas, whose 1:46.08 was a new personal best. Guy Learmonth was third in 1:46.31.

English’s winning time in Kent is just shy of the 1:45.80 standard for next month’s World Championships in Doha.

However, English is still expected to get a ticket via the qualifying rankings.

This was the latest impressive run by the three-time European medalist, who recently won the 800m race at a Diamond League meet in Birmingham in 1:45.94.
