Weather update: Motorists warned as ‘landslide’ blocks road in West Donegal

A landslide has covered a road in Co Donegal after the county was lashed by heavy overnight road.

Tonnes of earth came crashing from a hill onto the road at Min na Loch in Gaoth Dobhair.

The road is a busy route for locals but there are no reports of injuries at this time.

The road will be blocked until Monday as Donegal County Council prepare a clean-up operation in the area.

Local county councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig was at the scene from early morning.

He said “It is a very busy road but thankfully nobody was passing. There’s a history of landslides in this area.

“The council has done very good work in blocking off the road and the area will have to remain that way.

“There is still a huge amount of water on that hill and there could be another movement.”

A number of roads in the area have been affected while the River Clady has burst its banks at Bunbeg.

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said a lot of private roads have also been destroyed.

“This will cost a lot of people a lot of money to repair and I would appeal to the Government to consider an aid package for these people right away,” he said.

Other areas hit by heavy rain across Donegal include Termon and Ballybofey.

We will bring you a full report on all the damage later in the morning on Donegal Daily.
