Donegal’s 2,389 Junior Cert candidates face results delay

Students who sat their Junior Certificate exams in June 2019 will have two extra weeks to wait for their results, due to a delay with the State Examinations Commission.

This year’s results will not be available until Friday 4th October, while they are traditionally handed out in mid-September.

2,389 students in Donegal were registered to sit the Junior Cert exams this year.

The State Exams Commission said the delay in results was caused by changes in the Leaving Cert timeframe. They said the delay is necessary as they prioritise appeals.

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has said that delays to Junior Certificate results are unacceptable. He has called on Education Minister Joe McHugh to both explain this delay and apologise to both students and parents who anxiously await these results.

Teachta Ó Laoghaire said: “Many students put a lot of time and effort into their state exams, and it must be extremely disappointing for them to discover that they will not get their results next Wednesday as expected.

“It undermines the seriousness of state examinations and is unfair to all affected.

“I expect the Minister to provide clarity on this issue as a matter of urgency.”
