Toland, Barrett to take to international stage after big club moves

DONEGAL DUO Tyler Toland and Amber Barrett will hope to shine on the international stage this evening after making big club moves this summer.

Toland and Barrett are in the Republic of Ireland squad for the Euro 2021 qualifier against Montenegro at Talaght Stadium.

St Johnston woman Toland recently signed a two-year deal at Manchester City, while Milford native Barrett has made the switch to FC Köln in Germany.

Tom O’Connor remains the interim Irish manager following the shock departure of Colin Bell from the role.

“Tyler Toland is still only 18 and has joined Manchester City. Hopefully she’ll develop into a world-class bracket if she keeps progressing,” O’Connor said.

“A lot of our players are operating in professional environments across England and Europe, so the Irish-based players can look up to that.”

Montenegro were hammered 10-0 by Germany at the weekend.

Only two from a group that also includes Germany, Ukraine and Greece will have a chance of featuring in the finals. Second in the group will, at least, be in a play-off.

For now, O’Connor is just aiming for a win to kick-start the campaign.

He said: “As a young player you want to play at the highest level. As a young manager it is the same and I’m currently the custodian of a senior international team so I’m delighted. Whatever happens, I’ll be on board in some shape or form.”
