LEAH GALLEN will have her eyes on the podium tomorrow when she takes to the canvas for a quarter-final at the European Youth Championships in Sofia.

The Raphoe ABC welterweight overcame German Annemarie Schierle yesterday in the Bulgarian capital in a last 16 bout.

Gallen – a bronze medallist at the 2018 European Junior Championships – took a 3-2 split decision to advance to the quarter-finals.

Tomorrow, Gallen will take on Turkey’s Gulcan Arga, who received a bye from the opening round of action.

Schierle was on top in the opening round yesterday before Gallen rocked the German at the outset of the second verse with a lethal right.

With all five judges in Gallen’s favour in the crucial third round, the five-time Irish champion stepped to within a win of a medal.

Three of the judges (Harri Juutilainen from Finland, Slawomir Milczarek of Poland and Nikos Poutachidis from Greece) scored the fight 29-28 in Gallen’s favour. The others (Belarus’ Siarhei Asanau and Hungary’s Sandor Babai) came down 29-28 for Schierle
