A goal in injury time got Cloughaneely out of jail in their first outing of the Intermediate Football Championship in their home game against Naomh Bríd this afternoon.

Cloughaneely 3-7 Naomh Bríd 2-8

Cloughaneely started strongly scoring 1-1 in the first five minutes. Cillian Gallagher opened proceedings with a point which was quickly followed by a goal from Paul Sweeney after he was well supplied by Mark Harley in front of goal.

Naomh Bríd picked up the pace scoring three points in succession from Calum Gallagher (free), Dara Brogan and Gearoid Gallagher. A John Fitzgerald point attempted to extend the home side’s lead to two points however Naomh Bríd responded strongly when the movements of Ryan Brogan, Sam Burgess, Clint Walsh combined to supply full back Liam Duffy in front of goal and he easily netted the visitors first goal of the day. The visitors went two points ahead in the 24th min with a Dara Brogan free; with John Fitzgerald then bringing the margin back to one point just before the half time whistle.

Naomh Bríd started the second half strongly with Brogan again making a great run which had goal potential but he took his point. Two points from Shaun McGarvey brought Cloughaneely level for a brief period before Gearoid Gallagher struck over another for Naomh Bríd. Paul Sweeney managed to secure his second goal of the day in the 43rd minute when a great ball in by McGarvey deflected off the keeper with Sweeney then on guard for the rebound and striking the back of the net.

The game progressed tit for tat with further points from McGarvey for Cloughaneely and Calum Gallagher for Naomh Bríd. Naomh Bríd took the lead again in the 52nd min when Ryan Brogan produced a great run and netted himself a superb goal for his efforts; he then quickly backed it up with a point. Into injury time and Cloughaneely trailed by one point and just as it looked like time had run out for them they showed great composure to secure a third goal; John Fitzgerald placed a great ball into the danger zone which was easily won by Sweeney who then found Darren Ferry there to support him with Ferry getting the final touch to hit the back of the net.
