Bronze for Leah Gallen after semi-final loss in Sofia

LEAH GALLEN must settle for a bronze medal at the 2019 European Youth Championships after the Raphoe welter fell to defeat against Viktyria Csilla Ambrus.

The Hungarian took a unanimous decision win in her semi-final clash with the gallant Gallen in Sofia.

Wins over Annemarie Schierle from Germany and Gulcan Arga of Turkey had secured Gallen’s place on the podium.

The Raphoe ABC star was gunning to upgrade the colour of the medal, but Ambrus proved too strong in a frustrating bout for Gallen.

The five-time Irish champion received a public warning in the second round for holding and just couldn’t get into a rhythm.

Gallen won a bronze at last year’s European Junior Championships in Russia and will come back from Bulgaria with a bronze later this week.

Gallen had stepped up from 66 to 69kgs this year and the added weight of her opponent proved a difference in today’s semi-final.
