Negotiations for Donegal County Council to purchase additional land that could result in an extension to Swan Park are underway, it has emerged.

It is understood that local landowner has approached the council with an opportunity to purchase land close to the site.

Donegal County Councillors for Buncrana and Carndonagh were briefed on the potential purchase at a private sitting of the Municipal District of Inishowen on Monday last.

The successful purchase of the lands would result in a major enhancement of the park and to the town of Buncrana.

Restoration work began on the Inishowen park in August following the allocation of €1.7million funding from the government.

The much-loved community park was destroyed in the severe flooding of August 2017.

Since then, community campaigners have worked tirelessly to save the park.

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was presented with an open letter signed by nine local groups calling for funds during his visit last September.
