WHEN JOE Donaghy took the reigns of Naomh Colmcille in the summer, relegation was a distinct possibility and the Championship was a spec in the distance.
Having survived the drop by the thinnest of margins, Naomh Colmcille are looking ahead to a place in the quarter-finals of the Intermediate Championship.
An encouraging first day win over Gaeil Fhánada was backed up by a hard-earned 0-9 to 0-6 win over derby rivals Burt last night.
“From where we came from when we stepped in, we’re happy enough,” Donaghy told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.
“The performance wasn’t great, but we got over the line.
“We felt that handling errors let us down and the Burt goalkeeper made a good save from Michael Lynch. These games take on a life of their own.”
Lynch, who played at midfield, saved a penalty after going into nets to face Calvin Gallagher’s kick and it was a case of home comforts for Naomh Colmcille.
They only returned to home soil at Pairc Colmcille in late July having been forced to play away for 12 weeks following an infamous sanction handed down over a fundraising tournament held at the venue.
Donaghy added: “When I stepped in, survival in the League was the goal. We did that by the skin of our teeth. When you do that, it brings its own momentum and brings its own plusses.”
