St Mary’s Convoy advanced to the semi-finals of the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Junior Championship with a win over Naomh Padraig Muff at Hibernian Park in Burt on Sunday morning.

St Mary’s Convoy 1-9 Naomh Padraig Muff  0-4

Charlie Collins reports from Hibernian Park in Burt.

After it took both teams some time to settle into the game, with only one score in the opening 17 minutes, Convoy took control to lead by 1-05 to 0-02  by half-time and never looked in danger of losing.

Brendan Bonner pointed in the second minute for Convoy but it was another fifteen minutes before Joseph McGill added a second point as both teams struggled to break down strong defences.

A minute after that McGill point Convoy struck a big blow when Packie Mailey did well before setting up Peter Blake for a simple tap-in goal and when McGill added another point Convoy led by 1-03 to 0-00 after 21 minutes.

Brian McColgan finally got Naomh Padraig Muff on the scoreboard with a well-taken point in the 23rd minute but Blake and John Toye added Convoy points either side of a Jonathan Toye point for Muff to leave it 1-05 to 0-02 at half-time.

Joe McGill and Jonathan Toye exchanged early second-half points and Ronan Hoye got Muff’s fourth to leave it 1-06 to 0-04 in the 37th minute but Convoy scored the game’s final three points with McGill’s excellent free and super  scores from play by Blake and Bonner to round off a solid display and clinch a last-four place for the third year in a row.
