Gardai are investigating a brutal attack on a young Co Donegal family who were attacked in their home by two masked men brandishing hurley sticks.

The two men, who were both wearing black clothing, broke into the home on the Oakgrove estate in Buncrana on Sunday night last.

The men broke into the house around 9.15pm and began wrecking the house.

The attackers used the hurley sticks to smash a number of windows in the house.

The woman, who was alone with her two young children, was left terrified by the incident.

The two attackers then fled the scene on foot towards the Millfield Road area of the town.

Gardai say they believe the men then got into a black Mitsubishi car before speeding away.

Gardai say they are treating the attack with the utmost seriousness.

A spokesman said “A full investigation has been launched into this attack which was both a burglary and an assault.

“The people, which included young children, were left terrified in their own home and this simply cannot happen.

“If anyone knows anything about this assault then they should contact the Gardai. ANy small piece of information may help.”

Anybody with any information is asked to contact Buncrana Gardai on 074 93 20540 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
