Listen: ‘We left it behind us’ – Niall O’Donnell

AS HE headed off into the evening, Niall O’Donnell couldn’t but ponder on one that got away for St Eunan’s.

O’Donnell hit seven points as St Eunan’s were pipped to a place in the Donegal SFC final by Naomh Conaill as Eoghan McGettigan’s last-minute point won the semi-final for the Glenties men.

“We came in this year and we knew we hadn’t fulfilled our potential,” O’Donnell told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub after a 0-15 to 1-11 defeat.

“This year was looking well and we had a lot of confidence. We felt the pressure was lifted off us when we got out of the group. We left it behind us there.”

That sinking feeling perhaps worsened as St Eunan’s reflected on a second-half that looked to be theirs when Eoghan McGettigan finished for a goal on 42 minutes.

But Naomh Conaill didn’t panic, stayed on programme and, finally, got over the line.

O’Donnell sighed: “The last ten minutes, AJ (Gallagher) got a turnover on me and they went up for a score. That was a kick to the stomach for us. We just struggled in the last five minutes or so.

“We’re devastated to be honest.”
