Plans to identify and address derelict sites around Letterkenny underway

A map of derelict sites is to be presented to Letterkenny Municipal Authority with a view to seeing what can be done about the disused properties.

The issue of the derelict sites in the Cathedral Town was raised by Cllr Ciaran Brogan at the latest meeting of the authority.

Cllr Brogan said he feels the authority can be more pro-active is seeing what can be done about the sites.

And he said he feels members of Donegal County Council can assist in helping to identify and renovate these sites.

“I feel we need to be more proactive and that sometimes not enough is being done. I feel some from the council need to elave their offices now and again and see what’s happening on the ground,” he added.

Cllr Ian McGarvey said that sometimes derelict sites were a liability for families and then would welcome an approach for them.

Director of Community Development and Planning Services with Donegal County Council, Liam Ward said a lot of work had been done in the area but that a map was compiled which will be represented to members.

He added that it was a bigger issue than just the Letterkenny area.

Cllr Brogan added that a lot of properties were still in the hands of financial institutions and this gave the council an opportunity to approach them.

“This could be a win-win for us,” he said.
