The countdown is on to the Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) Careers & Postgraduate Studies Fair on Monday 21 October from 12-3pm at the Letterkenny campus.

The event is the Northwest’s largest Careers & Postgraduate Studies Fair, bringing employers, educational bodies and more together to showcase the opportunities they have for thousands of students.

With 4,000 vacancies on the day, the Careers & Postgraduate Fair is not to be missed for anyone thinking about their next career move or step into postgraduate education. The journey is only beginning for graduates and this event is a great way to discover what paths to take. Attendees do not have to be graduates of LYIT to come along and see what’s on offer.

One such student is Rossa Doherty from Letterkenny, who is in his fourth year of Quantity Surveying at LYIT. Rossa attended the fair in his second year of college, where he met Liam Langan, the founder of Buildcost Chartered Quantity Surveyors in Dublin.

Here, Rossa and Liam talk about the win-win opportunities available at the fair:

Rossa made an invaluable connection with the company which led him to secure his third-year work placement with Buildcost. He continues to work part-time with the company as he completes his degree, putting his studies into practice in a thriving working environment.

“I’d highly recommend for all students to come down next week to the careers fair to meet all the employers. It’s great to get a chance to meet them first-hand and get speaking to them in an informal way and to get a chance to present your CV,” Rossa said.

Liam Langan, founding director of Buildcost, said the LYIT Career & Postgraduate Studies Fair has been a success for him for the past three years. He has found skilled students who completed placements with Buildcost, and they all excelled with the team.

“We love the buzz of the careers fair. It’s great meeting the students, they have loads of great ideas, it really invigorated us,” expressed Liam.

Liam, who started his own studies at LYIT, believes that now is an exciting time for students coming out of education and beginning their careers, as the opportunities are there for the taking.

“We also get the opportunity to present to the second and fourth-year quantity surveying students. We are humbled that we are able to impart some knowledge onto them and give them some idea of what the working life will be like, to supplement all the learning that they have had at LYIT,” stated Liam.

Over 70 employers, universities and colleges, professional bodies and voluntary organisations will take part in this year’s event.

Catherine Lyster, Careers Officer and event organiser voiced that this is an event not to be missed.

“This event is the largest careers event in the Northwest, the range and calibre of recruiters attending this year’s event is exceptional.  We have recruiters and employers from a broad range of sectors including IT, Pharmaceutical, Finance, Social Care services, Design, Hospitality and Telecommunications providers,” Catherine said.

Careers being recruited for at the event include App Developers, Food Scientists, Project Specialists, Data Analysts, Quantity Surveyors, Marketing Specialists, administrators and much more.

Also a range of professional bodies will be in attendance for those seeking opportunities in teaching, accounting, engineering, etc.

The event also offers opportunities in the voluntary sector for people seeking to boost their job prospects with voluntary experience.

Attendees will have the opportunity to avail of the ever-popular CV Clinic where they can have their CV or personal statement reviewed by career experts free of charge.  A giant jobs wall featuring a vast array of graduate vacancies can be viewed in the main exhibition area.
