The government will form a legal framework for abortion regulations by March 2020.
The new legislation takes effect today (22nd October) following last-ditch attempts to restore Stormont and avert the legislation.
The DUP leader Arlene Foster said it was “shameful” day and said her party would continue to explore options to oppose abortion.
Meanwhile, celebrations took place across Northern Ireland as the clock struck midnight and human rights campaigners welcomed a momentous day for women and LGBTI people.
