Donegal County Council has yet to receive more than €160,000 in unpaid parking fines over the last two years to date, it has emerged.
Figures obtained by Donegal Daily under the Freedom of Information Act show the local authority is yet to receive money owed for more than 2000 unpaid parking tickets in the county.
Between 2018 and 2019 (to date) 2,135 ticket fines were issued and unpaid within Donegal amounting to a total of €162,160.
Once a fixed charge notice is issued, payments are expected to be made within 28 days with fines ranging between €40 – €150 for offences such as fixed charge offences, non-display of tax disc or for the illegal parking in a disabled bay
If payment is not received within 28 days, the fixed charge amount will increase by 50% and payment should be made within a further period of 28 days.
In cases where parking fines remain unpaid, the local authority ordinarily initiates court proceedings against the registered owner.
Thousands of cases come before the district court every year relating to the non-payment of fines.
In its response to the FOI request, a council spokesperson said that “every effort is made to pursue all outstanding fixed charge notices up to and including court proceedings.”
